There were 2,942 Leeds fans in the crowd of 17,218. United were without Jody Morris, Zoumana Camera, Seth Johnson and Eirik Bakke due to injury, but Dominic Matteo played the full ninety minutes and Michael Bridges the final twenty-six minutes as they returned from long-term injury. Ben Burgess headed the home side into a fourteenth minute lead before Leeds brought off Jason Wilcox after only seventeen minutes as a precaution, as he had already been booked. He was replaced by James Milner. There was no more significant action in the first half, but Alan Smith had a goal disallowed and Nigel Martyn made an excellent save before Danny Allsopp doubled the score with a rasping drive. Leeds made three second half changes with Danny Mills replacing Ian Harte and Stephen McPhail coming on for David Batty, both in the sixtieth minute and four minutes later Michael Bridges was on for Mark Viduka. Scott Carson, Frazer Richardson and Simon Johnson remained unused on the Leeds bench. Hull made five substitutions starting with Dean Keates for Ian Ashbee in the fifty-eighth minutes, followed in the sixty-ninth minute by Richie Appleby replacing Stuart Green and the a double substitution in the eighty-first minute of Daniel Webb for Ben Burgess and Clayton Donaldson for Danny Allsopp and finally two minutes later by Carl Regan for Jason Price. This left Paul Musselwhite, Jason Whittle, Steve Burton, Russell Fry and Steve Melton unused.
